I used to play tabletop Dungeons & Dragons way back in the 1980’s when my kids were little .. I did NOT start MMO online gaming until after I retired and moved to South Dakota – approximately 2013 due to my “swiss cheese memory” issues that have now been diagnosed as Vascular Dementia.
I played Atari [1980’s] with the kids so that was the beginning of my computer/console gaming experiences .. I also had a Commodore 128 .. and we went to the local game arcades and played PacMan and so many more too 🙂 .. Playstation & Nintendo in various flavors as well as Bard’s Tale & Myth & Magic and Diablo on the computer when they FIRST RELEASED. Yes I am OLD 🙂
The doctor first diagnosed me [maybe 2011?] with what he thought my issues were at the time: Alzheimers.
NO ONE GETS BETTER FROM THAT DIAGNOSIS – it is a death sentence of slowly losing your mind with a very slow painful for those watching ya death.
I put my affairs in order and started making plans for NOT being too much of a burden on my daughter while I slowly disintegrated.
2012 – I did NOT qualify for Medicare until 2012 but once I had insurance, we did the computer testing so we would have a baseline of where I was to track my downhill slide towards losing my entire identity & life as I knew it. We also did a brain MRI that showed nothing – which the doctor said was a good sign that it had not progressed rapidly at all.
2013 – Neverwinter entered my life after a Facebook game called Armies of Magic shut down. I still have several friends from that game that I dearly love!!!
One lives in Ireland 🙂 and is incredibly gifted! I wish I could go have coffee & cakes with her right this minute – I have a piggy bank of change started to fulfill my dream of going to Ireland and visiting her 🙂 while I pay down the current medical bills so I can then start saving to really go see her 🙂
2014 – we did the computer testing to see how much deterioration had occurred since the 2012 testing. I GOT BETTER!!! Not remarkable upwards progress at the time but very define-able better. It could NOT be Alzheimers! NO ONE with Alzheimers ever gets better 🙂 My diagnosis changed to: Vascular Dementia – I probably had had many small TIA strokes that caused the memory & brain fog & more issues tho I also have Arthritis & Fibromyalgia.
2016 – We did the testing again and I was still improving 🙂 .. slowly but surely!
My brain started re-wiring itself during this process – I am NOT who I used to be and never will be again .. I have had to learn all sorts of things about me and how my brain works/thinks and how to communicate with the world better.
2018 – We are doing the computer testing again in April to see how I am doing 🙂
... it is a very good thing to track my progress or see if I am stabilized at a certain point or degenerating.
Gaming aka Neverwinter has been really good therapy for recovering from brain injuries in my case 🙂 .. lol .. and my doctor told me to keep doing what I was doing since I was getting better 🙂 and here I am blogging again as well as creating art, reading for pleasure and still gaming 🙂
